Annual Charity Walk 2009

Photographs of the Kinneff Reelers & Friends Annual Charity Walk ’09; a coastal walk from Montrose or St. Cyrus Nature Reserve to Inverbervie.

This year the funds raised have been donated to Parkinson’s Disease Society. The Parkinson’s Disease Society is the leading charity dedicated to supporting everyone affected with Parkinson’s in the UK and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that mainly affects movement. It can make everyday activities such as walking, talking, swallowing, and writing extremely difficult. Currently there is no cure for Parkinson’s and no way to halt its progression. While the main symptoms of Parkinson’s are tremor, slowness of movement, and rigidity of muscles, symptoms can also include pain, severe fatigue, and depression. Drug treatments may offer relief of symptoms, but they become less effective over time and can cause serious side effects such as pronounced, uncontrollable movement.

The Parkinson’s Disease Society has pioneered and developed successful services that are now well-proven to provide a better quality of life for people with Parkinson’s. You can find out more about the work of the PDS from their website www.parkinsons.org.uk/scotland.

Thanks to entirely voluntary donations, the Society is also the UK’s largest non-commercial funder of research into the cause, prevention, and management of Parkinson’s and the search for a cure. Research has come closer to discovering a cure in the last decade than ever before and the PDS is investing in the next generation of experts in the hope that they make a breakthrough.

As for the walk – the weather gods took pity on us and all but the stragglers had sunshine all the way. The ladies even found time for a longer than usual refreshment stop – maybe the champagne had something to do with this?

There are not as many photos as usual – well certainly of the gents, which is a pity as the scenery was stunning with only The Reelers on 3.5 miles of glorious sand at Montrose. With dolphins playing in the bay, herons and swans on the North Esk and Mike Forbes is sure he saw a salmon, some great photo opportunities were missed by yours truly!

The total amount raised, including gift aid was £3,306.

Kinneff Reelers would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who generously donated.
